Wednesday web surfing: Stay in your lane edition

From the CScout Japan blog comes this item about a Japanese restaurant that has goldfish living in its deep fryer. The hot frying oil floats on top of the water while the fish safely swim below it, munching on the scraps of food that sink to the bottom.

Goldfish in deep fryer

Check out the You Tube video here. (Commentary in Japanese, but I think it’s pretty self-explanatory. Especially the “zzzz-zzzzt” phrase uttered by the announcer in the first few seconds. I don’t speak the language, but I assume that’s the international phrase for what happens if the fish try to, ahem, ‘rise above their station.’)

Note to the stupid: Do not try this at home. As the blog and the video explain, the restaurant deep fryer has been specifically modified to not explode when water is added to the hot frying oil.

Really interesting but seems a little(?) bizarre? Is this to keep the frycook entertained or do the customers get to see the residue of their selections “trickling down” to feed the fish? I believe it would cut back on my appetite. (& to think, I don’t like the “fishy” taste of Cpt D’s chicken because it seems to be fried in the same oil as the fish sticks…) Did the article mention how they get deceased fish out (or do they just serve them-ha,ha)?

I honestly think they think it helps clean the fryer, since the fish eat the leftover ‘fry-gunk’ that seeps through the cooking oil. And, since the oil stays separate from the water, I don’t think it would add to the fishy taste, though they are probably frying different kinds of fish in the oil for food, LOL.

You may want to read the comments on the original site. It seems the fish are just a temporary demonstration to prove that there is actually water in the bottom tank. The fish’s longevity doesn’t seem to be an issue.
