Busted!

By the long expressway camera of the law.

Speedticket

Highway speeds here are monitored by automatic camera, which snaps a photo of your front bumper if you pass a sensor going above the limit. Then, they attach it to a ticket (complete with chart for calculating the fine) and send it to you in the mail.

This is to avoid the, “It wasn’t me!” defense, though it sort of makes it look like the cops are informing us that our hatchback has been out carousing when we’re not looking. (”It’s 11 o’clock, do you know where your Kia is?”) You’ll notice they have a nice white box blocking out the view of the driver. I have blurred our license plate number but it’s clearly visible on the ticket and the picture.

I’m not real happy that Dave’s first reaction to this was: “Man! We need to get our GPS [software] updated!”

You know, because, clearly, the problem is that we don’t still know where all the cameras are, and not that “we” shouldn’t be driving so fast.

Of course not !

Don’t you know it’s my man-given right, by the testosterone in my blood, to drive as fast as possible without dying or getting caught ?

Seriously, though, you are right. I did indeed (nearly) obey the speed limit driving the 60km or so to Incheon airport Sunday morning.

Also, thinking about the baby and stuff, I should (and will !) adjust my driving indicator farther away from “saving time” and closer to “safety”.

In response to e-mon’s comment, which I’ve removed, that’s more personal information than I intended to put up on the Internet.

Scotto, LOL! He swears he’s reformed!

The white box actually covers the passenger side (in left-hand drive cars anyway) for their privacy as they’ve done nothing wrong - my ugly mug has shown up all too clearly on a number of tickets…

What about the “I can’t read the friggin’ ticket” excuse? Tried that one yet?

YLB, I think that excuse is usually met with the “Well, then, maybe you can’t read the road signs and we need to take your license away,” penalty.

We’ll stick with the fine.

Ddaengjoong, yeah, I guess that box is on the other side of the car. I wasn’t thinking about that. I wonder if they keep the pictures on file or something.
