We’re in

by Cat on January 26, 2008

We’re here in the new place and still tunneling out/unpacking all of our stuff. Somehow every time we move, we find all kinds of crap that we forgot we had/thought we’d gotten rid of/can’t *believe* we haven’t gotten rid of, etc.

We’ve also been dealing with all those little things that we were supposed to do before we actually moved and didn’t - registering at the local gu office, getting a permit to park the car (which requires that we show a proof of residency, such as the record of registration with the gu office … ) You get the picture.

I can already tell that living in a high-rise is going to be a completely different experience than we had in our villa. Our old apartment was in a building with 16 apartments total (in two adjacent six-story towers). Our new apartment building is 24 stories high and there are more than 20 of them in the complex. According to one of our neighbors, there are 2,800 apartments in our “town” and several thousand cars in the underground parking garage.

It’s like a small town built vertically. Like its own self-contained mini-universe, the complex has attracted all kinds of satellite businesses that cater to it. Restaurants, dry cleaners, butchers, clothing boutiques, grocery stores, saunas, daycare centers, a kindergarten, and a movie theater are all either in the complex itself or clustered a stone’s throw away.

I’ll try to post pictures and a longer update soon.

Changes happenin’ - too late to turn back

by Cat on January 20, 2008

OK. Enough with quoting obscure Tahiti 80 tunes.

Haven’t been posting much because, as I mentioned, the baby is still on a sporadic sleep schedule. Also, we are moving— trading our trendy, south-of-the-Han villa address to move on up to a deluxe apartment on the East Side. (For real, the actual east side of the city. Dongdaemun-gu, to be exact.)

It’s actually been a long back-and-forth process (“Yes! We found a new apartment! Yay! “No, they decided they don’t want to rent to foreigners…boo!” “Yes! They changed their minds!”.… yadda). , Not nearly as simple as I naively thought it would be when I wrote this.

Month five: All I really want

by Cat on January 13, 2008

Dear Susana,

Tuesday you were five months old and, as is currently your custom, you were up to greet the day about 4:30 a.m. local time. You still go to sleep in the evenings quite easily, but you still wake up hungry at least once in the middle of the night and sometimes twice or more. And, lately, you’ve also started waking up rarin’ to go earlier and earlier—one day last week it was 3. Usually, you’re only up for an hour or so and then back down. But this? This is why I am now barely able to remember my own name during the day, let alone keep the blog updated.

What really puzzles us is how much you are a morning person. From which dark recessive gene did this emerge? It’s certainly not a sentiment with which your dad or I are acquainted. I get you up to change your diaper and you immediately drop the groggy face and just start chatting away: “Ooooh! Aaaah! Whoo!! Hahahahahaha!! Baa! Whaa! Haa! ” *grin.*

Oh, lord, you are lucky you are so cute.
